Hyundai Motor India has recently confirmed that the globally acclaimed IONIQ 5 would be launched in India this year. Hyundai’s BEV growth ambitions across the country will be marked by this vehicle. In 2019, the brand launched the Kona electric SUV, and now the IONIQ 5 will be the brand’s second electric vehicle in India. This news came after Kia announced plans to launch the EV6 in India in May 2022.
What is expected from this car?
IONIQ 5 name is derived from a mix of the words “ion” and “unique,” and it was announced as long-term research and development initiative focused on sustainable mobility. The IONIQ brand was created to combine ‘life-changing mobility with environmental performance.’
The IONIQ 5 is expected to have a revolutionary exterior and interior design, as it is based on Hyundai’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Several touchpoints inside the cabin of the all-electric CUV will be made of environmentally friendly materials. According to Hyundai, the E-GMP was built on four key pillars, viz. Modularity, Reliability, Usability, and Performance. The meaning of these pillars is:
- A single platform that can accommodate a variety of body forms, with a modularized battery system and higher synergies through BEV component sharing.
- E-GMP will pave the path for very reliable BEVs of the future, thanks to its low center of gravity, usage of Ultra High Strength Steel, and 8-point battery mounting.
- The E-GMP will usher in a new era of usability with its flat floor and adjustable seating layout, as well as a novel interior area that includes a sliding console and sliding 2nd-row seats.
- The E-GMP will bring a component of fun-to-drive electric vehicles with its enormous battery capacity, enhanced handling, and a top speed of 260 km/h.
Hyundai’s plan for expansion in India:
Commenting on the announcement, Unsoo Kim, MD & CEO of Hyundai Motor India Limited said, “As a customer-centric brand, Hyundai is focussing very strongly on electric mobility across its businesses and product range for a progressive and sustainable future. Hyundai is proud to receive the World Car of the Year 2022 for the IONIQ 5 as this award is a true testament to our vision and efforts in driving the adoption of BEVs globally. Hyundai Motor India has already committed to the expansion of our BEV line-up to 6 models by 2028 and today, with great pride we are announcing the introduction of IONIQ 5 in CY 22 in India.”
